Aaaand it’s Friday again!
Ashley Judd fights back against speculation about her puffy face;
That women are joining in the ongoing disassembling of my appearance is salient. Patriarchy is not men. Patriarchy is a system in which both women and men participate. It privileges, inter alia, the interests of boys and men over the bodily integrity, autonomy, and dignity of girls and women. It is subtle, insidious, and never more dangerous than when women passionately deny that they themselves are engaging in it. This abnormal obsession with women’s faces and bodies has become so normal that we (I include myself at times—I absolutely fall for it still) have internalized patriarchy almost seamlessly. We are unable at times to identify ourselves as our own denigrating abusers, or as abusing other girls and women.

Over at Rookie, Tavi gushes about the new TV show Girls. As does Emily Nussbaum in the New York Magazine. Fajr, of Stylish Thought says it’s something new, whilst at Gawker, John Cook had this to say;
She walks out of the hotel into the New York morning. A song by Paul Simon’s son is playing. A magical jolly homeless black man stops her on the street to say, “Why don’t you smile? Does your heart hurt? Oh girl when I look at you I just want to say Hello New York!” This magical jolly homeless black man will appear at the end of every episode, saying something wise and innocent. It will be like a tag. Skrillex.
The Womanist says its all about whining white women;
I agree that we need more images of women in the media, but Girls is not the solution for the erasure. ‘Woman’ should not simply mean White woman. If we have to have a homogenous cast, would it have been that hard to make even one of these characters likeable? I cannot think of a single area that Girls is successful in. If you missed the pilot episode consider this your warning.

Happy Friday everyone!
Hilarious post on Rookie: How to be a Lady;
You will most likely have several womanly items to carry around with you. For example: gloves, car keys, a compact mirror, a loaded gun, a spare gun, and more. To carry all these items you will need a sturdy and stylish pocketbook. Although a lady can never have too many pocketbooks, try to coordinate with your outfits. Keep an eye out for large pocketbooks that could discreetly hold small children. Children do the best manicures, so make sure to snatch one up the next time you see one!

Rosalind asks what is real beauty?
We increasingly live in a society driven by the visual. Our days are filled with images, whether on the pages of a magazine or through idle clicks across the internet. A select few of these photos may be considered to be pleasing or beautiful as an art form – perhaps a portrait taken by Irving Penn, or a magnificent flight of fancy assembled by Tim Walker. However, the relentless exposure to snaps of other individuals invites us to become judges of appearance, whether we want to or not.

The super-duper Jetta Vegas explains Why I’m not a militant vegan;
These days, I keep to myself. Sort of. I make vegan related zines and buttons in my online shops, I tag delicious meals I create #vegan and, above all, I lead by example. To me, this method is more effective. I don’t come off as pushy or militant. I simply show people how easy it can be to live vegan (in Seattle, WA, USA anyway). People respect that, and I feel like I’m able to reach out to more people because I’m not scaring folks away with frightening images and stomach-churning videos.

Lady Doctors! Yes! I really wanted the next doctor to be a woman. Like really wanted it badly. This is so much more awesome than I could have imagined.
So some of the femme Doctor cosplayers I interviewed were clear about their motivations, but even the ones who were less conscious were clearly making up for what they saw as a lack of female protagonists. While there are plenty of awesome companions, there are no female heroes in Doctor Who. The companions are, definitionally, sidekicks. And femme Doctor cosplayers are very aware of this. They want to be heroes, not followers and sidekicks, however badass. And Doctor Who does not offer them a hero that matches their experience, who looks anything like them. So they invent her.

I’m hopeful about a day when a girl can walk down the street without bare arms, ankles, shoulders, seen as an open invitation, or as Meg so politely puts it, “sweet hetero pussy”. I don’t feel like it’s my job to ensure I don’t get harassed. It shouldn’t be. But for some reason, it is.

Margaret Cho on self-esteem and revolution;
When you don’t have self-esteem you will hesitate before you do anything in your life. You will hesitate to go for the job you really wanna go for, you will hesitate to ask for a raise, you will hesitate to call yourself an American, you will hesitate to report a rape, you will hesitate to defend yourself when you are discriminated against because of your race, your sexuality, your size, your gender. You will hesitate to vote, you will hesitate to dream. For us to have self-esteem is truly an act of revolution and our revolution is long overdue.

Ariel Maccarone and Jennifer Popperl were at the opening of Mr Brainwash’s new exhibition Life is Beautiful for Chinashop;

Life and style tips from a centarian. I think I need to turn this into a poster;
- I never go to bed with my makeup on. that is number one.At night you must let your skin breathe.
- I use a lipstick brush to paint on my lipstick–It stays on longer that way. I can also use a lipstick longer than anyone else because I can dig into it.
- Every night before I got to bed I use Elizabeth Arden’s 8 hour beauty cream on my lips. You must keep your lips moisturized.
- When it comes to fashion you must be aware of your skin tone. You don’t wear orange lipstick with a red dress.
- I make myself go out everyday, even if its only to walk around the block. The Key to staying young is to keep moving. You are never too old to exercise.
- Invest in Quality pieces, they never go out of style.
- Don’t look at the calendar, just keep celebrating everyday.
- I dress up everyday and I don’t wear blue jeans. I dress up even to mail a letter, you never know who you will meet along the way.
- I have been active my whole life. An old Elizabeth Arden Ad said,”If you want to look like this when you are 40 start when you are 20.”
- I wake up every morning and say, “This is the day the lord has made.”

The inspiring Quiet Riot Girl writes about unpopular men . It’s a good read. She says of Top Gun;
It is interesting to see how a film that would totally flunk feminists’ precious Bechedel Test, and be considered an example of ‘misogyny’, is shown by Simpson to be a tender portrayal of a very common theme in men’s psychology – the evasion of ‘the feminine’. A theme that is exaggerated by war, and by Hollywood war movies. Isn’t that something worth considering as an aspect of masculinity rather than dismissing outright?
Have a super weekend!

I get this idea that we, as geeks, are expected to rise above the common herd that are influenced by advertising and self-hate. We’re so much cleverer than that, so much more accepting! We were the fat kids in high school!
But we’re not. After all, geek boys lusts after the thin ones, every geek girl is bombarded with pictures of thin Leia, thin Xena, thin Sailor Scouts. Comics portray thin people as good, fat people as bad. There’s a reason Desire is slim and Despair is fat.

But she’s getting the causal relationship wrong. Rebellion against and disregard for cultural norms, mores, and social codes is the primary manifestation of coolness, and thus young people want to be bad in order to be cool.

I have a younger sister and two infant nieces, and I often think about the kind of world they are growing up in. Cammila writes elegantly about the adolescent trend in high fashion and its effect on us;
The development of little girls and young women into adulthood is supposed to include a proportionate amount of what I think you might call “being a kid.” In addition to it being damaging to a girl’s developing sexuality, identity, and feelings of self worth, it’s also just plain unfair for a kid to be deprived of precious moments in life where the structures and strictures of beauty, body, and style do not yet apply. Every girl deserves the right to arrive at and own her sexuality on her own terms, but I tend to think the same right applies to adulthood in general.

I actually cried a little reading this. Do you think he’s gay and other inappropriate questions. If you take one thing away from this week’s Threads from the Web, please make it this;
Do you think he’s gay? Is not a cool question for anyone. Not a 5 year old, a 15 year old or a 50 year old, because no matter what, it’s really irrelevant. In a world where we struggle with the sexualization of children. Why would be discussing a child’s sexuality?
Do you think he’s gay? Pollutes a conversation with undertones and stereotypes. Bad stereotypes, old stereotypes.
Do you think he’s gay? Makes me want to ask you if you think your child will be in to nipple rings, ribbed vibrators and fetishes. Do you? Have you thought about your toddler having sex? Or who’ll they’ll have sex with? No? Me neither.
